The Hospice Memorial Regatta is held annually in memory of Jack Beatty. Jack grew up on the Niagara River in Youngstown where he gained a passion for sailing. He spent much of his life navigating the Lower Niagara River and Lake Ontario where he was known and respected for his ability as a skipper. Jack was also an accomplished water-skier. A national champion who performed at Cypress Gardens for many years, Jack was an innovator in kite skiing, jumping, barefoot, and trick skiing. As a member of the Youngstown Yacht Club, Jack was vital and active, encouraging new sailors, cruising his boat "Perbacco!" and living life to the fullest. When Jack was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2001, we told him that we planned to continue his legacy by naming this event in his memory. With the help of his family and friends, Jack sailed in what would be his final race. On August 22, 2001, he placed third in the White Sail Division. Jack passed away five days later while under the care of his loving family and Niagara Hospice. The event was renamed in his honor to remind us of a most spirited man who possessed a love of life and passed it along to all us.
